Stanley Recreation

July & August traffic tips...use 4th to Chapman Lake Park & Campground, 8th is closed

  6 Parks -- 5 right in Stanley, plus Otter Lake just 7 miles north -- provide an exciting range of options:

      * Boating * Fishing * Hiking * Bird Watching * Tennis
      * Disc Golf * Children's Playgrounds * Campgrounds
      * Volleyball * Biking * Basketball * Elk Park & Deer Park

Please note: City ordinance requires that all dogs and pets are to be on a leash at all times.

The 81 acre site of Chapman Lake Park (map)  was donated to the people of Stanley by the Northwestern Lumber Company after their mill closed in 1922.  The park was named after George Chapman manager of the mill, who made the presentation to the city.  The mill pond was drained and cleaned of the tons of logs which had sunk to the  bottom during the logging years. A new concrete dam was built, brush was cut, sand hauled for a beach and hundreds of pine seedlings were planted.  Over the years restrooms with flush toilets, bathhouses, the Maves Memorial Pavilion, lighted ball fields, bleachers, playground equipment, tennis courts, a campground and a deer and elk park were added. On any summer day the park is visited by people having picnics, playing tennis, or enjoying the wildlife of Chapman Lake Park.

The Chapman Lake dam and bridge replacement should be completed soon.  The dredging of the lake to reduce invasive plants and algae
and create deeper water pockets to improve fish survivability has been completed. During July bathrooms at the campground and behind the football field
will be connected to city water and sewer as part of our city's "parks improvement plan".

On the shores of Chapman Lake the City of Stanley operates a modern campground:

FANDRY PARK --
In 1975 land was acquired on the east side of the lake and improvements were made.
This is known as Fandry Park. Since then a picnic shelter and playground equipment have been added. Ball fields and dugouts were improved in 2009.
Fandry Park is also home to the Stanley Veterans Memorial.

SOO PARK -- Another popular stopping and gathering place,  this park is located on the corner of Broadway and 1st Avenue in the heart of downtown Stanley.
A new pavilion with picnic tables is available and new children's playground equipment have been built and installed this summer, thanks to the hard work of
the SOO PARK improvement committee and donations from many local residents and organizations.

Stanley Farmers Market
is held in SOO PARK every Saturday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 29 through October 2, 2010. For information or vendor registration contact
the City Clerk's Office at 715-644-5758 or call the Farmers Market Coordinator Jeanne Gates 715-644-0244 jeannegates@jeannegates.com

OLD HOSPITAL PARK-- located on Fourth Avenue has a gazebo with several picnic tables and benches.

OTTER LAKE -- is located 7 miles north of Stanley.  County facilities include boat landings, camping, swimming and a picnic area.  The bountiful lake provides fishing during all seasons.  An esker (a long narrow ridge of sand and gravel deposited by a stream flowing underneath a glacier) on the west  side of the lake is one of the larger undistributed terminal moraine deposits in Wisconsin.  A state snowmobile trail runs along the lake's east side.

HIGHWAY 29 WAYSIDE PARK -- Located on S. Broadway  and Sawmill Road, west side, south of Highway 29 and across the street from McDonald's and the Shell station. Small park for casual picnicking that is also pet friendly.
